About R. Brent New, M.D.

Dr. New attended Texas A&M University, then earned his B.S. in Biology from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1995 and completed his Surgery residency and research fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston) in 2001. Dr. New returned to San Antonio to complete his residency in Thoracic Surgery at the Health Science Center in 2003.

Dr. New is Board Certified in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American College of Cardiology. Additionally, he is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network (CTSNet), the M.D. Anderson Physician’s Network, the Texas Medical Association, and the Texas Surgical Society.

Dr. New practiced in Cape Girardeau, Missouri from 2003 through 2007. He then joined with Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons (CTVS) in Austin, Texas from 2008 through 2016, where he served in the roles of Medical Director, Program Director, Department Chair and Service Chief. He also held faculty appointments at Texas A&M University School of Medicine and the University of Texas Dell Medical School. Dr. New returned to Cape Girardeau, Missouri in late 2016 to oversee the program transition and served as the Chief of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and the Director of Cardiovascular Services for St. Francis Healthcare System. Dr. New was honored to return to San Antonio in June of 2018 and affiliate with South Texas Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons.

Dr. New performs cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgical procedures. His clinical interests include aortic valve/root surgery, endovascular aortic surgery (TEVAR/EVAR), transcatheter valve procedures (TAVR), mitral valve repair, Maze procedure, VATS lobectomy, and minimally invasive valve surgery.

Dr. New is married and has 3 sons. His interests include sports, hunting, fishing, snow skiing, travel, food and wine.
