History

South Texas Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgical Associates, PLLC was formed in September, 1997. The Association was the result of mergers of several prominent cardiothoracic surgery groups and individual surgeons. The resulting entity contains nine cardiothoracic surgeons, and is widely recognized as the premier cardiothoracic and vascular surgery group in San Antonio and the surrounding South Texas area.

Our surgeons operate out of eleven different San Antonio hospitals. Their work represents approximately two thirds of all heart surgeries performed in this community. In 1998, its first full year of operation, the Association consolidated office operations from three locations to its current single office site. The Association has its own scheduling and business office functions and staff, and employs four surgical technicians who assist the surgeons in the operating room. South Texas Cardiothoracic is a completely independent practice, and does not have any formal business arrangements with any other entities such as anesthesiologists, perfusionists, or hospitals.

South Texas Cardiothoracic surgeons enjoy an excellent reputation for high quality, leading edge cardiothoracic surgery. This reputation is not restricted to the San Antonio area, but rather it extends internationally. Many of these surgeons hold key committee positions at various hospitals. Two surgeons specialize in pediatric surgeries, while others have other specific areas of expertise. Two surgeons serve as the primary transplant surgeons for the Heart Transplant Program of the Methodist Healthcare System.

In 2001, South Texas Cardiothoracic formed the Institute for Beating Heart Surgery to help promote the technique of off-pump coronary artery bypass operations in the this community and beyond. These broad capabilities make South Texas Cardiothoracic uniquely qualified to meet the complete cardiothoracic needs of the South Texas area.

Mission

South Texas Cardiothoracic is committed to its corporate mission of "enhancing overall cardiac and vascular health " by providing high quality, patient-centered health care, surgical services and management support throughout San Antonio and the South Texas region of the United States. Since 1997, South Texas Cardiothoracic has consistently grown and broadened its capabilities by attracting the premier cardiothoracic surgeons in this area.

South Texas Cardiothoracic surgeons operate at eleven different hospitals in San Antonio, using leading edge techniques. We are the preferred heart and lung surgical group in South Texas.
